Writing amounts out without mistakes
On receipts, cheques and contracts you write the amount in figures and in words. When the two differ, the words count on a cheque, and that is the usual reading for other documents too. A mistake in the words can cost money.
- In English: four thousand three hundred and forty-five, with a hyphen between tens and units.
- Write cents as "and 50 cents" or as the fraction "50/100". Add the currency: Surinamese dollar (SRD), US dollar or euro.
- Draw a line after the amount in words so nobody can add to it.
- In Dutch, numbers up to a thousand are one word (driehonderdvijfenveertig); after duizend comes a space (vierduizend driehonderdvijfenveertig).

Frequently asked questions
Which counts when figures and words differ?
On a cheque the amount in words counts. For other documents the words are usually taken as well. Always check both before you sign.
