Year by year

Interest on savings may be taxable, and SRD inflation can be higher than the interest rate. Compare your bank's terms.

Interest, inflation and currency

  • Compound interest: interest is added to your balance and then earns interest itself. The longer you save, the bigger the effect.
  • Real return: subtract inflation from the interest rate. If prices rise faster than your interest, your savings buy less later.
  • SRD, USD or EUR: saving in dollars or euros protects against a falling SRD, but the rate is usually lower.
  • Term deposit: a higher rate for a fixed period. Taking the money out early usually costs interest or a penalty.
  • Ask your bank for the rate after fees and whether tax is withheld.
