Checking VAT yourself
- Adding VAT: amount without VAT times 1.10 at 10%. SRD 1,000 becomes SRD 1,100.
- Removing VAT: amount with VAT divided by 1.10. SRD 1,100 contains SRD 100 VAT, which is 1/11 of the total, not 10%.
- Which rate: the standard rate applies to almost everything. The low rate covers water, electricity and cooking gas among others; the high rate covers luxury goods listed in the annex to the law.
- Who charges VAT: only businesses registered for VAT with the tax office. Above SRD 1,000,000 turnover a year registration is mandatory.
- Round each invoice line to whole cents, then add up. That keeps your invoices in line with your VAT return.
